The Story of the East Harlem Holiday Tree starts at a tree farm in West Jefferson, North Carolina

Tree Farm
Greg Walsh of Greg’s Holiday Center travels to a North Carolina tree farm in August and selects a beautiful tree for us. He returns in November to oversee its cutting and loads it onto his truck and takes it to New York City.

Installation
Workers from Greg’s Holiday Center install the tree and put garlands of lights around it. They also put in place the special tree topper that Genevieve Andre has created.

Decoration
The workers then decorate the top two-thirds of the tree with the ornaments that Genevieve has created. Genevieve and her helpers hand up the ornaments and direct their placement. Then Genevieve and her helpers decorate the lower one-third of the tree.

“Winter Flowers” Ornaments
Artist Genevieve Andre works all year, collecting cans and bottles, removing labels, washing them, and preparing them to be transformed into unique ornaments for the East Harlem Holiday Tree.

Greg Walsh and his team return in January to remove the decorations and lights from the tree. Genevieve and her team are there to retrieve the decorations. Then the tree is disassembled and taken to nearby Central Park to be chipped up, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for our city’s parks and community gardens.
Greg Walsh y su equipo regresan en enero para quitar las decoraciones y luces del árbol. Genevieve y su equipo están allí para recuperar las decoraciones.
